Interiors

As digital access to information grows, the Songdo International City Central Library is envisioned as more than just a repository of books—it is a vibrant space for human connection and interaction. Designed as an urban hybrid, the library integrates flexible co-working areas, cultural programming, community activities, and leisure spaces alongside traditional collections and educational resources.

Our design prioritizes an open, intuitive layout that accommodates diverse needs and fosters interaction across different age groups, backgrounds, and disciplines. Spaces range from intimate single-user pods to expansive double-height reading rooms, from enclosed study areas to open-air terraces, creating a dynamic environment that supports both focused learning and social engagement.

A Landmark of Civic Identity

As a symbolic civic structure, the library’s massing and appearance play a crucial role in defining its presence within the city. Designed for maximum visibility, the building maintains open sightlines axially from main streets and diagonally from intersections, ensuring that pedestrians and vehicles can perceive its striking form from 270 degrees. The library’s metamorphic massing shifts dynamically based on the viewpoint, blending square and triangular geometries to address both axial and frontal urban conditions.

The facade design, composed of expanded metal mesh and curtain walls, offers a dynamic interplay between solidity and transparency. Depending on daylight orientation and time of day, the exterior transitions from partially opaque to fully transparent, creating an ever-changing architectural expression. At night, the library transforms into a luminous beacon, reinforcing its symbolic role as a center for learning and public engagement.

A Grand Atrium for Connectivity and Circulation

All public entrances lead to a Grand Atrium, defined by a monumental triangular void featuring a skylit staircase that floods the space with natural light. This centralized volume connects various levels and clarifies circulation, offering a visually cohesive and intuitively navigable experience.

Integrating Nature and Urban Landscape

The library is deeply integrated with nature, both visually and spatially. The surrounding landscape design creates paved plazas, each featuring a unique focal point that encourages gathering and reflection. Additionally, three large terraces and belvederes seamlessly connect to interior spaces, fostering an interplay between indoor and outdoor environments. At the roof level, two programmed towers open onto an expansive terrace with panoramic views of the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and the sea beyond.

Sustainable Design for a Resilient Future

As a forward-thinking public institution, the Songdo Central Library is designed to be at the forefront of sustainability. The building’s siting and architectural parti are inherently driven by ecological considerations. Its compact massing maximizes outdoor green space, particularly on the South and East, while the central atrium and narrow floor plates allow for optimal daylight penetration, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

By merging cutting-edge environmental strategies with a human-centered design approach, the library serves as a benchmark for sustainable public architecture, ensuring its lasting impact on the community and the city at large.
