Park Avenue Loft

Interiors

Located in a historic former Gimbel department store—repurposed into a multi-family residence in 1989—this compact loft benefits from extra-high ceilings. The building has a second-level main lobby reached via a grand staircase, another remnant of the previous use. The interior comprises a kitchenette, bathroom, and a versatile main room, cleverly divided by custom millwork to create distinct zones for work, sleep, and relaxation. A large shelving media unit doubles as a closet, while vertical-patterned boiserie, built-in closets, and window seating maintain a sleek, minimalist aesthetic. Since the studio faces north, mirrored window trims amplify natural light and visually blur the boundary between the indoor space and the exterior, resulting in a bright, contemporary retreat that honors its historic setting.

Process

This compact loft functions like a Swiss Army Knife of design, featuring custom millwork that creates distinct functional zones while leveraging extra-tall ceilings for maximum efficiency and effect.

View of the living room, where Boiserie creates a cohesive datum around the space. Vertical striations introduce a rhythmic element and accentuate the loft’s tall ceilings, adding visual interest.
The bed and desk unite into a single, multi-functional architectural element, while the kitchenette is separated by a retractable reeded glass steel storefront, maximizing both space and aesthetics.
A custom, extra-tall shelving unit introduces a bold architectural furnishing element with a tripartite design. It features a 45-degree angled base, a middle section of solid drawers, and an upper portion combining open shelves, a closet, and a concealed TV. The vertical divisions align seamlessly with the boiserie’s striation behind, creating a cohesive and visually dynamic composition.
View of the restroom, where large-format tiles visually separate the space into two distinct color zones, adding depth and contrast to the bathroom’s overall design.
Detail shot highlighting the two-color tile theme, emphasizing a harmonious interplay of hues and a distinctive visual rhythm.
