Collaborative process shapes enduring public spaces in a high-traffic transportation hub
Tracks Raw Bar and Grill is a new, welcoming restaurant we designed in the heart of NYC’s Grand Central Madison. The challenge was to create an inviting hospitality experience in one of the city’s busiest new transit hubs, navigating complex technical rules and multiple major stakeholders.
From Transit Hub to Hospitality
Our primary goal was to create a space that felt both open to the public concourse and like an intimate escape. We designed a standing bar that addresses the main corridor for quick-service, while a full-service bar and cozy seating areas (a mix of booths and banquettes) invite guests to stay.
The restaurant is located next to a large-scale mosaic by artist Yayoi Kusama. Our design is intentionally minimal and respectful, using a clean metal-and-glass aesthetic that complements both the artwork and the modern station. We introduced warmth through soft curves, fluted glass, and durable, fire-rated leather upholstery to elevate the guest experience without compromising on safety.
Expertise in Complex Environments
This project showcases our ability to manage high-stakes commercial projects. We successfully navigated the complex requirements of multiple stakeholders, including the MTA, LIRR, and Grand Central’s tenant review teams, managing everything from strict egress guidelines to a mandate for non-combustible materials.
We turned these constraints into design features. A custom aluminum tube structure overhead, for example, not only frames the space and integrates lighting but also gives a subtle nod to the restaurant’s railway theme.
The result is a seamless and sophisticated dining environment that meets rigorous technical standards. We specialize in turning complex, high-traffic, and regulated spaces into destinations that are both beautiful and built to last.
