Turning Constraints into Assets
Natural materials & lighting can overcome spatial limits to define the experience.

Tucked into the bustling concourse of Penn Station, Penn Cellars was a project defined by its challenges: an extremely low 7-foot ceiling packed with untouchable pipes and ducts, and a floor that couldn’t be touched.

Instead of fighting these constraints, we embraced them.

Our design transformed the low ceiling from a problem into the shop’s main feature. By painting the complex infrastructure black, we created a sense of compression that gives the space the intimate, cozy feeling of descending into a private wine cellar.

Custom mahogany millwork wraps the rooms, establishing a warm, clean line that cleverly conceals all the necessary mechanics and lighting. We used natural materials, like warm wood and honed stone, to evoke the tactile, earthy feel of winemaking and terroir. The result is an atmospheric and memorable escape from the busy station.

We delivered a complete vision for this project, designing not only the architecture and interiors but also the brand’s entire visual identity, ensuring a seamless experience for every customer.

Inspiration

Subterranean Pressure

A low, dark ceiling compresses the space, evoking the weight of earth above. Like a cellar or cave, it feels protective yet tense—enclosure with a hint of unease. Light is scarce, absorbed rather than reflected, deepening the room’s stillness and density.

More than Subterranean Pressure

Soft Edges

Soft edges are ambiguous. They transform a sharp transition between a plane and the intersecting plane into a gradient. Such design language—defined by rounded corners and flowing forms, whether in plan or elevation—instills warmth, fluidity, and an inviting sense of approachability.

“The cellar is first and foremost the dark entity of the
house, the one that partakes of subterranean forces.
When we dream there, we are in harmony with the
irrationality of the depths.”

G. Bachelard, The poetics of space
